Real estate investor Darryl Shaw is leading the development of Gas Worx, a walkable, mixed-use project in Ybor City and the Channel District of Tampa.
The construction of the first phase, comprising 317 apartments and 2,400 square feet of retail, began in October and is set to open in spring 2024. A second apartment community with 370 apartments and 8,000 square feet of retail will begin construction later in 2023. Kettler, the project developer, is also starting the design process for three sites within Gas Worx, including two multifamily developments with around 450 apartments and the conversion of a 70,000-square-foot brick warehouse into a mixed-use space with retail, restaurants, office, and public areas.
Gas Worx aims to include nearly 5,000 residences, 140,000 square feet of retail, and 500,000 square feet of office space when fully built. The project will feature the renovation of a 1950s-era warehouse into a food hall, preserving its historical significance. Additionally, Shaw has revealed plans for Ybor Harbor, a 33-acre mixed-use waterfront development south of Adamo Drive. Ybor Harbor aims to connect Ybor to the Channel District and downtown Tampa, offering up to six million square feet of residential, office, hotel, and retail space. The developers are working towards an agreement with Port Tampa Bay to transform a restricted waterfront area into a public space with piers, boat slips, floating docks, green areas, and a boardwalk lined with restaurants and shops.
