A Renaissance-era school reopens as Auberge Resorts' latest Italian escape

Updated: 1 day ago

Collegio alla Querce, now part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, has officially begun welcoming guests in Florence’s hillside San Domenico district. Once a cultural academy and boarding school dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, the property has undergone a major transformation, emerging as a serene Tuscan retreat that honors its rich heritage while delivering a refined, modern stay.

Tucked among olive groves, cypress-lined paths, and tiered gardens, the resort occupies a series of Renaissance-era buildings, including historic villas, chapels, and a former schoolhouse. Its location just outside Florence’s historic center offers both proximity and peace, surrounded by the natural beauty of Tuscany.

The meticulous restoration was led by Esteva i Esteva, a respected architectural firm known for blending preservation with innovation. For the interiors, Florentine studio ArchFlorence introduced custom-designed elements, warm finishes, and curated art while preserving original architectural features such as frescoes, vaulted ceilings, and aged stone walls.

Collegio alla Querce offers 83 accommodations, including 34 suites, many retaining historical elements like wood-beamed ceilings and arched windows with views of the surrounding landscape or city skyline. Among the most notable is Residenza La Quercia, a spacious 2,292 sq ft private suite located within the Palazzo Moderno wing that includes a private rooftop terrace, plunge pool, and dedicated dining area—all with sweeping views.

The resort’s culinary offerings reflect a strong connection to Tuscan traditions. The signature restaurant, La Gamella, highlights local flavors with a focus on regional Italian dishes. Guests can also enjoy seasonal menus at Conservatorio, a bright, garden-facing space with a glass atrium design. Poolside dining is available at Café Focolare, while Bar Bertelli offers handcrafted cocktails and a curated cigar selection within the cozy, wood-accented lounge that once served as the former principal’s office.

Wellness is at the core of the guest experience. Aelia Spa offers treatments using products from Furtuna Skin, a Sicilian-based brand known for its use of organic botanicals. The spa includes multiple treatment rooms, a hammam, and quiet areas designed for recovery and relaxation. A fitness center and heated outdoor pool are also available to guests looking to maintain their routines, unwind in the Tuscan sun, or simply recharge in a peaceful setting.

The estate’s grounds have been restored to echo the grandeur of their origins, with sculpted hedges, shaded walkways, and terraced lawns. Pathways weave through the olive groves and lead to quiet courtyards and fountains. The hotel offers curated activities including art workshops, wine tastings, and guided walks that explore both the property and the surrounding Florentine countryside.
