Design approved for new YMCA in Tampa Heights Historic District

A significant milestone has been reached for the proposed new YMCA in Tampa Heights. The Tampa Architectural Review Commission has unanimously approved the design plans for the state-of-the-art facility, a key component of a larger mixed-use development.

The 70,000-square-foot YMCA will be part of a six-acre project that also includes a 200-room hotel, 184,000 square feet of office space, 400 residential units (10% affordable), and 20,000 square feet of green space. The development will preserve the historic Standard Oil Building, incorporating it into the hotel lobby.

Located directly across from the current YMCA on Palm Avenue, the new facility will offer a range of amenities including a wellness center, indoor gymnasium, outdoor aquatic center, rooftop activity space, and program areas for all ages. The existing YMCA will remain open during construction.

“This approval reflects the careful planning and vision we continue to invest into this project,” said Matt Mitchell, President & CEO of the Tampa YMCA. “Our commitment is to create a space that goes beyond wellness, fostering a stronger sense of community.”

The project is a collaboration between the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA and Ellison Development. Casey Ellison, President of Ellison Development, expressed enthusiasm about the approval, stating, “This brings us significantly closer to finalizing our plans, and we are energized by the progress.”

The architectural firm FleischmanGarciaMaslowski has designed the YMCA to blend modern elements with the historic character of Tampa Heights. “Our design seamlessly merges the modern vision of the facility with the rich historic character of Tampa Heights,” said Marcel Maslowski, President & Director of Design.

The YMCA will soon launch a capital campaign to raise funds for construction. Once final drawings are complete, Ellison Development plans to file for permits and break ground in 2025.
