The Fort Negley Park revitalization project is making strides with fresh renderings and funding secured to bring its transformation to life. Metro's Master Plan for Fort Negley, completed in 2022, outlines an ambitious two-phase improvement strategy, with an estimated $12 million allocated for the initial phase.

This first phase will breathe new life into the site, introducing pathways, interpretive plazas, promenades, and a memorial lawn on the historic grounds of the former Greer Stadium. These additions aim to create a more engaging "pedestrian experience" and will be accompanied by structural repairs to the fort, as well as an archaeological study of the historic Bass Street Community in the park’s northern area.

Construction is anticipated to kick off by spring, with the first phase expected to unfold over a 12- to 18-month timeline. A key feature of this phase is a memorial wall near the lawn, dedicated to the “laborers, soldiers, and refugees that built, served, and sought refuge at the fort.” Originally constructed in 1862 as a Union stronghold, Fort Negley holds a prominent place in history as the largest inland fortification of the Civil War.
The second phase, pending further funding, will expand the interpretive center to include additional programming space, "context-appropriate play elements," and an outdoor classroom, enhancing its educational and community-focused offerings.

Metro and HDLA have also released detailed renderings, showcasing both ground and aerial views of the planned improvements, including lush green spaces, walkways, and the memorial lawn. According to the project plan, the updates are guided by three core principles: preserving and maintaining the Fort Negley site, honoring and revealing its layered history, and fostering public engagement at the local, regional, and national levels.
