Miami International Airport (MIA) is gearing up for a major expansion as it continues to soar past passenger records. By the end of 2024, MIA expects to welcome over 55 million travelers, marking the highest numbers in its history and the third year in a row the airport has outdone itself. Just two years ago, MIA hit the 50 million mark for the first time—proof of its growing role as a major global hub.
To keep pace with this rapid growth, MIA will break ground on a $746 million expansion of its South Terminal next year. The project, set to begin in fall 2025, includes a three-level Concourse K with six gates for narrow-body aircraft or three for wide-body planes, plus new airline lounges and additional concession spaces. The updated gates will serve both domestic and international flights, and the design will blend seamlessly with the existing South Terminal finishes.
The selection of a contractor is expected by mid-2025, with completion scheduled for spring 2029.
This isn’t the only upgrade on the horizon. MIA is also planning renovations and expansions for its Central Terminal, with groundbreaking set for 2028, and a future project for the North Terminal, though its timeline is still in the works.
With passenger numbers climbing year after year, MIA’s upcoming expansions aim to ensure a smooth, modern travel experience for millions while cementing its status as a gateway for travelers around the world.
