During the initial tumultuous years of the pandemic, Palm Beach County distinguished itself as the foremost recipient of wealth migration in the United States, drawing unprecedented sums to Florida as revealed by a novel analysis of IRS data for 2020-2021 by the Economic Information Group based in Washington D.C. This analysis marked the first exploration into wealth migration through IRS data, showing Palm Beach County leading with a $7 billion net gain in adjusted gross income, surpassing other affluent areas such as Miami-Dade and Collier County in Florida.
The influx of wealth into Palm Beach County was part of a larger trend observed across Florida, which saw the highest net gain nationwide at $39.2 billion, significantly influenced by individuals relocating without changing jobs. This shift in wealth was notably driven by New Yorkers, contributing $9.8 billion to Florida's net income gain, with Palm Beach County being a prime beneficiary. The pandemic accelerated a movement that had been slowly building since at least 2006, as identified by Kelly Smallridge, President and CEO of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, who had been targeting affluent second-home owners for potential relocation of their companies to the area.
The arrival of financial giants like Goldman Sachs and Millennium Management in West Palm Beach in 2021 signaled a turning point, highlighting Palm Beach County as a desirable location for major firms due to its strategic advantages including no personal income tax, convenient travel connections, and luxurious office spaces. This movement was also reflected in the significant growth of high-net-worth individuals in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach, ranking them second in the U.S. for the influx of millionaire residents according to Henley & Partners.
Realtor observations and market dynamics during the pandemic underscored the dramatic shift in Palm Beach County's real estate landscape, with all-cash offers and significant sales prices becoming commonplace. This wealth migration not only transformed the area's economic profile but also cemented its status as a coveted destination for affluent individuals and businesses seeking a blend of luxury lifestyle and favorable tax conditions.
