The Miami-Dade County Commission approved a contract for the construction of a new 451-room Westin-branded hotel at Miami International Airport (MIA). The contract was awarded to FDR Miami Hotel, LLC, a joint venture between Fontainebleau Development and Related Companies. The hotel will be built on a 1.82-acre site near the Dolphin Parking Garage and will include various amenities such as restaurants, rooftop dining, a pool with a terrace, event space, spa, fitness center, and a climate-controlled pedestrian bridge connecting to Concourse D.
FDR Miami Hotel, LLC will pay Miami-Dade either $2.58 million per year or 3.5% of the hotel's gross revenue, whichever is greater, resulting in at least $244 million in revenue for the county over the next five years.
However, another proposal for a second hotel at MIA, put forward by Parmco Airport Hospitality LLC, was narrowly rejected by the commission. Parmco's proposal was for a 423-room Hilton Signia hotel with a different design and set of amenities. The commission determined that FDR Miami Hotel's bid was superior based on recommendations from consultants, a selection committee, and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.
Fontainebleau Development, with properties like Fontainebleau Miami Beach and Fontainebleau Las Vegas, and Related Companies, led by Miami Dolphins' general managing partner Stephen Ross, are the companies involved in the winning joint venture for the Westin-branded hotel.
